Intrigued by this up to about the halfway point. The establishing scene is crisp and nicely underplayed, and rather than get us to take sides between the warring husband and wife the writer keeps some subtle give and take. Then enters Isaac, brilliantly played with a wrong-footing mix of candid courtesy and menace, and I was looking forward to what he had in store.

But the halfway point arrived, and the story fell apart with a twist. Interestingly, one of the symptoms is that somebody decided the music, which had been fine up to then, needed to go all ominous and saturate the viewing experience like a Geraldo exposé on TV. If this is what the ’80s synth-revival in horror has led to, we’re all doomed!

I think the real problem is the story was never anything more than a mash-up of hill-billy holocaust with home invasion with Twilight Zone morality tale, yielding nothing original of its own. So we end up with various pencil-chewing plot points, accompanied by “Ah, so that’s why!” dialogue. Weak tea, and debatable whether it makes for a genuine horror.

The performances are actually good, with the wife and grand-pappy giving strong support to Isaac. And the direction and cinematography are OK, as the editing keeps things flowing. Pity ’bout that darn screenplay, mister.

Overall: What went up came down. Added a ratings point out of respect for the actors.
